Parenting Beyond the Nest

Navigating the changing relationship with older teens and young adults as parenting shifts from managing to influence.

You spend years teaching, guiding, protecting, correcting, reminding, planning, and helping your children prepare for independence.  And then they start becoming independent. Suddenly, parenting requires a different skill set. As our children move through the later teen years and into adulthood, our role begins to change. We’re learning when to speak and when to listen. When to step in and when to step back. When helping is truly helpful and when our own fear, grief, or desire to protect them may be keeping us more involved than we need to be.

What We’ll Explore

In this 90-minute workshop, we’ll talk about:

  • Why this transition often begins long before a child actually leaves home
  • The emotional impact of moving from being their primary world to being a part of their world
  • How grief, fear, and anxiety can sometimes disguise themselves as helping, fixing, or control
  • Releasing without rescuing
  • Moving from Manager → Mentor
  • Staying emotionally available without interfering or being their emotional stability
  • Practical ways to listen more and advise less
  • Trusting God with the parts of our children's lives we can no longer manage
  • Creating healthy boundaries that actually protect connection
  • Rethinking the idea of the “empty nest” altogether
